Akagera national park

Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, is a scenic wildlife haven known for its diverse ecosystems, which include savannas, woodlands, wetlands, and lakes. Spanning over 1,200 square kilometers, the park is Rwanda’s only “Big Five” safari destination, home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos, along with giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous antelope species.

The park’s lakes and swamps, notably Lake Ihema, are crucial for aquatic life, including abundant bird species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers. Akagera has seen significant wildlife restoration efforts, such as the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, following their local extinction. Managed through a public-private partnership with African Parks, Akagera is a model for successful conservation and community engagement.

Visitors can enjoy game drives, boat safaris, bird watching, and guided nature walks. Its proximity to Kigali (about a 2-3 hour drive) makes it a convenient and rewarding stop for tourists exploring Rwanda’s natural beauty.
