Lake Mburo National parkĀ is strategically situated a few kilometers off the main highway from Kampala to the western region for Uganda through Mbarara. The park remains a popular stopover for clients heading toĀ BwindiĀ Forest National Park forĀ Gorilla Tracking. Lake Mburo is is situated in Kiruhura district about 30 km by road before Mbarara (the largest city in the sub region) in the Eastern direction and about 240km from Kampala- the capital and largest city of Uganda. Lake Mburo National Park covers an area of 260 sq.km and it is the smallest of theĀ savannah national parks of Uganda.
Initially, Lake Mburo National Park started as a controlled hunting area in 1933, in 1963, it became a game reserve and it was finally declared a national park in 1983 under the regime of President Milton Obote. However, after the collapse of Obote`s government, the park was again destroyed by the Ankole and Bahima pastoralists who used the area for grazing and hunting wild animals until 1986 when it was finally restored by the National Resistance Movement government. And it is currently under the management ofĀ Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
The park`s name was derived from the existingĀ lake MburoĀ which forms part of a 50km long wetland system linked by the swamp together with other 13 lakes in the area of which five lakes lie in the borders of the park. Most of the park area is covered by woodland, the savannah is scattered by forested gorges and rocky ridges while the lakes are lined with patches of papyrus swamps, and narrow bands of lush riparian woodland. All these landscapes of the park feature a variety of wildlife of up to 70 species of mammals including Impalas, hippos, warthogs, oribi, Topi, reedbuck, Defassa waterbuck, buffalos, zebras, elands, jackals, leopards among others and up toĀ 350 species of birds.

Boat safari

Some of the most notable bird species viewed at Lake Mburo national park include; coqui Francolin, emerald spotted wood, rufous bellied heron, crowned cranes, bare faced go away birds,ross turaco, white headed barbet, Nubian wood pecker, white parot, red-shouldered tit,black bellied bustard, yellow breasted apalis,long- tailed cisticola, king fisher, African fish eagles and so many more.
Horseback riding
Another unique aspect ofĀ lake Mburo national parkĀ is the ability for one to carry out a game viewing exercise while riding a horse. The fascinating activity gives the park a distinction from the rest of the countryās national park as horse riding while viewing wildlife can only be done at lakeĀ Mburo National park.Ā The activity is done at Mihingo lodge under the guidance of trained staff in conjunction with the park rangers. Ā The horseback ride in Lake Mburo can take 1-3 hours as you explore the beauty of the national park savannah coupled by the view of the wild game. This experience is quit breathtaking imagine you seated on a horseĀ Ā moving into the savanna to watch wild game. The park is open to all visitors who intend to do guided nature walk and is usually conducted along with the ranger guide. From Rwonyo the park center, the guided walks take you to the salt lick presumably the candy place for numerous wildlife. At the salt licks, wildlife/ animals parade themselves to enjoy the taste of the salty licks made of up of water and soil. Another nature walk starts from 7:00am and runs for 2 hours, this takes place at the western part of Lake Mburo, guaranteeing you encounters with the hippos coming out of the waters as well as the hyenas returning to their dens.
