Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda, is a world-renowned conservation area famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. The park is part of the larger Virunga Massif, which spans Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering lush rainforests, bamboo forests, and volcanic mountains, it is home to five of the eight Virunga volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo.
In addition to gorilla trekking, visitors can spot golden monkeys, hike scenic trails, explore caves, and climb volcanoes like Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi. The park also holds historical significance as the research site of Dian Fossey, the famed primatologist. With its rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes, Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s premier ecotourism destinations.
The park is best known as a sanctuary for the critically endangered mountain gorillas. It is one of the few places in the world where you can see these majestic creatures up close. Visitors can also spot the endangered golden monkeys, adding to the park’s rich biodiversity.
